During his career of more than thirty seven years in health services administration, Mr. Kawwass has served in senior management and leadership roles helping making visions come true in academic medical centers, hospitals, mental health administration, hospital management companies, physician groups, health management program and facility development, strategic planning consulting firms, billing and collections, information technology and practice management and electronic medical records software and data hosting application service providers. He has been involved in infertility care management since 1990.
Mr. Kawwass served as the Administrator of The Howard and Georgeanna Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Infertility the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and at the Eastern Virginia Medical School a Medical School, with responsibilities for patient care, education and clinical research functions and activities. He was intimately involved in the planning and set up of the Jones Institute Northern Virginia/DC Center, which is now The Muasher Center for Fertility and IVF.
Within the scope of his institutional management roles, he served as CEO of several medical centers and hospitals ranging from 420 beds to 60 beds. Mr. Kawwass focused on medical staff, hospital development, construction, operations, planning and marketing. His physician practice experience included directing ambulatory services at a 420-bed teaching hospital, establishing and directing hospital-physician multi-specialty group practices, and being the catalyst for the development of a network of primary care physician practices, rural hospitals and a tertiary care teaching medical center hub.
Bassam is actively involved in other ventures that offer "solutions" that empower physician practices and healthcare organizations to achieve improved quality care, streamlined workflow and increased bottom line. These include professional and management consultation (Medical Administrative Counsel), information technology tools and resources (Practice Management and Electronic Medical Records Software, and Data Hosting), and Billing and Collections Services, (www.ascriptcorp.com).
Mr. Kawwass completed his master's degree in health and hospital administration education at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, with a residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, in 1980. He received his health information management education at St. Louis University, St. Louis in 1971, and his bachelor degree in business administration education at the American University of Beirut in 1970.
He is a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) and a Board Certified Fellow Healthcare Executive (FACHE). He is a member of the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA).
Currently, Bassam serves as the Regent-at-Large for the American College of Healthcare Executives, (ACHE), Region 2 which covers Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Puerto Rico. He had served for two, three-year terms on the ACHE Regent's Advisory Council of Virginia. He also was elected for two, two-year terms as President of The Health Care Administrators of Tidewater, the Virginia Chapter of the ACHE. He also served as a health services administration and strategic planning consultant to The World Bank, Washington DC.
Bassam served as a member of the ACHE Regent's Advisory Council of Virginia, 1999-2006. He was elected for two terms to serve as President of the Health Care Administrators of Tidewater, the Virginia Chapter of the ACHE. Mr. Kawwass currently serves on several national and state advisory committees: The ACHE Editorial Board Committee, the ACHE Bylaws Committee, and the Virginia General Assembly's Joint Committee on Technology and Science (JCOTS).
Bassam was the recipient of the American College of Healthcare Executives Virginia Regent's 2002 Leadership Award. He was also the recipient in 1995 of the Governor Caperton's Award for planning and establishing a model primary care center in Gualey Bridge, West Virginia.
